The Last Cowboy

from Have We Met Before? by Lucia Comnes

/

about

Harmony vocals, acoustic guitars, upright bass on the 1 and 3, Johnny-Cash-style groove, Doobie Bros bridge departure; a good old, straightforward country song, well almost, but it's got most of what you want to hear out on the range in Texas, especially the cowboy - a breakup song about renouncing a certain type of relationship and coming home to one’s self. Lucia wrote this song after her recent break-up with a man she thought she would spend the rest of her life with - ouch. She decided to leave the relationship but it was still hard as hell. The cowboy archetype is employed to help the song from taking itself too seriously. It is meant to be authentic and silly at the same time. It somehow works really well and audiences love it.

lyrics

The Last Cowboy

He was so broken when we met
I thought he could use a friend
The problem saving someone else
You’d be better off saving yourself

He was the last, they’ll be no more cowboys
No big hats, no dry and dusty roads
I ain’t going back, no I ain’t going back
It’s gonna be a long ride home

I packed my bags, and said goodbye
A red tail flew across the crystal sky
Placed a rose on his mother’s grave
He stood and watched as I drove away

He was the last, they’ll be no more cowboys
No big hats, no dry and dusty roads
I ain’t going back, no I ain’t going back
It’s gonna be a long ride home

Our time is passed, there’s no sand left in the glass
No laughter left here anymore

He was the last, they’ll be no more cowboys
No big hats, no dry and dusty roads
I ain’t going back, no I ain’t going back
It’s gonna be a long ride home
It’s gonna be a long ride home
It’s gonna be a long ride home
