On the date this song was released, it was day 53 of the national lockdown in Italy due to the Covid-19 outbreak. Since March 9, 2020, residents of Italy have not been allowed to venture more than 200 meters from their place of residence, except for grocery shopping within city boundaries. All public access to natural areas, beaches, parks, hikes and passageways have been closed.
The artist reports, "When I go outside to run the 200 meter radius around my apartment building, I am frequently stopped by the police and questioned. I have also been insulted numerous times by the neighbours who have taken to venting fear and frustration at those of us who find a way to run outside despite the lockdown."
The song references the artists place of residence during the quarantine which is in a small town along the coast of Liguria, a region west of Milan in northern Italy, known for its largest city of Genoa. Other places mentioned in the song are Bergamo and Brescia, cities in the Lombardy region which have been coronavirus hotspots and greatly impacted during the month of March 2020.
The song was co-written over FaceTime by Lucia Comnes who is American but currently based in Italy, and Richard Mitchell, an American songwriter based in Nashville, Tennessee.
lyrics
The Hills Of Liguria
words and music by Lucia Comnes & Richard Mitchell
Flowers are blooming in the fields and the hillsides
With the swelling of buds in the trees
On the terrace I feel like an innocent prisoner
With the sweet smell of spring in the breeze
Oh in the cool of the morning, little sparrows in a world I want more of
Oh what I’d give to fly with you above the hills of Liguria
Like slow rolling thunder in the byways of Bergamo
Trucks carry the coffins away
And in the old town of Brescia the church bells keep ringing
Through the alleys where no children play
Oh in the cool of the morning, little sparrows in a world I want more of
Oh what I’d give to fly with you above the hills of Liguria
Among the birds and bees and the shoulders that tease
Lurks an enemy no one can see
Oh in the cool of the morning, little sparrows in a world I want more of
Oh what I’d give to fly with you above the hills of Liguria, above the hills of Liguria
